As India undergoes massive economic and industrial development, the intensification of the need to educate its youth about the use and management of natural resources is critical for the future of the country, and the way that India will impact the global environment. By involving students of all ages in project activities, and creating an ongoing awareness about the need for natural resource conservation, the Project aims to inspire them to create a demand for environment friendly materials and the recycling of non-degradable materials.

In rural areas the Project promotes the development of plantations primarily through schools and colleges. A massive program started in Chennai during 2007 with 15% of all the new trees currently planted through this scheme. All over the state, about 300,000 students from National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Crop (NCC) have been involved in public rallies and planting. Video presentations, hill cleaning and nature awareness trips are also used to create environmental awareness among these groups.

In towns and villages, school teachers have shown a great interest in participating in PGH by organizing functions open to the general public with sapling distribution on their premises. Everywhere children are enthusiastic PGH Ambassadors participating in village processions and signature campaigns, ushering during functions and distributing brochures and saplings.

PGH welcomes Indian and overseas students undertaking internships for office or field work, offering them the unique opportunity to become involved in a highly interactive ecology project.
